Every day, thousands of people ask ChatGPT a version of the same question: which crypto exchange should I use. Most of what's written about the answer is speculation from screenshots. We measured it: 20 buyer-style prompts, 5 engines, 10 major exchanges, 1,000 observations.
Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance fill every engine's top three — 15 of 15 slots, no fourth name ever breaks in. But the engines crown three different winners: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini recommend Kraken first, Claude puts Coinbase first, and Google AI Mode leans Binance. Total agreement on the shortlist. Zero agreement on the order.
Each exchange got the same treatment: 20 buyer-style prompts, phrased the way real buyers ask, run across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Mode — 100 observations per exchange, run on July 22, 2026, US region. We recorded when an engine named the brand, when it cited the brand's own content as a source, and which third-party sources it leaned on. Every scoring weight is public on the methodology page.
One honest caveat that most reports skip: AI answers are not deterministic. Ask twice, get a slightly different list. That is why we report patterns across a prompt set, not a single screenshot — the same reason every AI visibility tool gives a different score.
Two engine notes, because honest measurement discloses its gaps: Grok is tracked but not scored in this report, and Google AI Mode ran degraded during this batch — 173 of its 200 queries errored — so its counts are directionally useful but far thinner than the other four engines, each of which completed all 200 checks. And one scope note: everything below is the US region. The same prompts run from Europe or Southeast Asia produce different names, which is exactly why regional editions of this report are next.
Three names fill every top-3 slot on every engine: Coinbase, Kraken, Binance. Not one engine let a fourth brand into its top three. That is the consensus core, and it is remarkably hard: 15 of 15 top-3 slots across five engines went to the same three exchanges.
And yet the engines still disagree on the winner. ChatGPT (82 mentions), Perplexity (83), and Gemini (93) crown Kraken. Claude crowns Coinbase at 83, with Binance and Kraken one mention behind in a photo finish. Google AI Mode leans Binance. Same three names, three different number ones, depending on which engine your buyer happens to ask.
The second tier is where positioning is actually being fought: OKX (33 to 48 mentions per engine) and Bybit (23 to 51) show up consistently but never crack a top-3. KuCoin registers strongly on Gemini and Claude but at half that rate on ChatGPT. And one genuine outlier: Perplexity surfaced SimpleSwap nine times in exchange answers; the only other engine to mention it at all was Gemini, twice. If you are a smaller brand, Perplexity is where you break into AI answers first.
Disagreement is not noise. Each engine has a different retrieval stack and a different trust list. Perplexity composes from live web citations and shows its sources, and it was the only engine to surface swap services (SimpleSwap, Changelly) in exchange answers. Gemini named the most brands per answer of any engine in our batch.
The full 100-point audit scores add a second axis: Crypto.com posted the highest overall score of the batch (76.6) on the strength of its brand queries and entity footprint, yet it barely appears in category answers — while Kraken (75.0) converts its score into actual top-of-answer presence on three engines. Being findable when someone asks about you and being named when someone asks about the category are different games. Kraken is winning both.

The practical read: if you optimize for one engine, you are invisible in the others by default. When someone asks whether ChatGPT recommends your exchange, the honest answer is that ChatGPT is only a fifth of the question. The teams that show up in AI recommendations everywhere have one thing in common, and it is not their website. This is the section most exchange CMOs have never seen. When an engine answers "best crypto exchange for beginners", it composes from a shortlist of sources it already trusts, and the shortlist is not what most marketing plans assume. YouTube is the single most-cited source in the entire batch (319 citations), with more citations than any website. Add Reddit (140) and UGC accounts for nearly 460 citations — the community layer outweighs every media brand.
The most interesting rows are the brand-owned ones. The only exchange domains that crack the top ten (kraken.com, binance.com, bitget.com) all run large educational and support hubs — engines cite their learn-center pages, not their landing pages. Kraken's own domain is the second most-cited source in the whole dataset with 246 citations, which is not unrelated to Kraken topping three engines' answers. The lesson is not "your website doesn't matter"; it is that only one kind of brand page earns citations, and it is the kind that answers questions.

There is no position 4. You are named or you are absent.
Engines converge on brands that appear consistently across their trusted sources. That consistency is buildable: coverage on cited outlets, presence in comparison content, disclosed community activity.
"Best crypto exchange for US users" and "best no-KYC exchange" produce different names than the generic prompt. Audit the phrasings your actual buyers use.
