AEO vs SEO for crypto.
They sound like rivals. They're not. One gets you ranked, the other gets you recommended, and for crypto, the second is fast becoming the one that matters. Here's how they differ, and how to run both.
Same goal. Different win condition.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) earns you a ranked position on a results page. The user still sees ten options and picks one. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) earns you a citation inside the single answer an AI engine generates, so you're not one of ten, you're the recommendation. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
For a crypto buyer asking "which exchange has the lowest fees?", SEO puts you on a list they scroll. AEO puts you in the sentence the AI speaks back. Both matter. But the behavior is shifting toward the answer, and crypto's early-adopter audience is leading that shift. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
The differences that matter.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A ranked position on a results page | A citation inside the AI's answer |
| What the user sees | A list of links to choose from | One synthesized recommendation |
| The query | A keyword ("crypto exchange") | A full question ("safest exchange for beginners?") |
| Optimizes for | Keywords, backlinks, on-page | Mentions, entities, structure, trust |
| Biggest lever | Authority + relevant content | Earned editorial coverage + consistent mentions |
| Where you compete | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Mode |
| Measured by | Rank, impressions, clicks | Citation share across engines |
| Time to move | Months | Often faster: a single strong placement can shift citations |
AEO doesn't replace SEO: it sits on top of it.
Most of your SEO foundation feeds the answer engines. The mistake is stopping at SEO and assuming AI will follow. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
What SEO already gives you
The foundation does not change. Answer engines need a crawlable, fast, indexable site they can actually read, and domain authority that makes you a trusted source rather than one more page in the index. They need content that answers real buyer questions, and a clean information architecture with internal links so those answers are findable. Every hour spent on that is spent once and counts twice.
What AEO adds on top
The additions are where the work diverges. Earned mentions across third-party crypto media matter most, because the majority of what an engine cites about you does not sit on your own domain. Then schema and quotable passages a model can lift cleanly, entity consistency across Reddit, YouTube, CoinGecko and Wikipedia so the engine resolves you to one thing rather than several, and access for the AI crawlers themselves: GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.

Web3 buyers are technical, skeptical, and quick to adopt new tools. Many now open ChatGPT or Perplexity before they open Google: asking which chain, which wallet, which exchange. By the time they'd have scrolled an SEO results page, the AI has already named a shortlist. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
That's why crypto teams can't treat AEO as "SEO's little sibling." For a high-trust purchase like moving funds onto an exchange, being the cited, recommended option is worth more than rank four on a list the user may never finish reading. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
One body of work, two payoffs.
- Keep your SEO discipline. Crawlable site, authority, real answers to buyer questions. This is the soil both grow in.
- Structure content to be quotable. Direct definitions, FAQs, comparison tables, schema markup: formats AI engines lift and cite verbatim.
- Invest in earned media. Editorial coverage in credible crypto outlets is the highest-leverage AEO move, and it builds backlinks for SEO at the same time.
- Fix your entity footprint. Consistent presence and naming across the crypto web tells engines you're a real, established project.
- Measure the AEO side separately. Rank tells you the SEO story; citation share tells you the AEO one. You need both dashboards.
What the citation data says about the difference
Most AEO versus SEO comparisons are argued from first principles. This section is measured. The figures come from a corpus of 39,948 citation events across 72 audited brands between April and August 2026, with the method published on the methodology page. See ai seo: what it is and what works for the wider picture.
The ranking signal and the citation signal are different signals. Brands holding fewer than 35 referring domains are named by AI engines in competitive categories today, while sites with over 3,000 referring domains are not. Domain authority, the single best-known predictor of ranking, does not predict citation. If the two disciplines shared a mechanism, that could not happen.
Coverage replaces authority as the dominant variable. Citation volume tracks the number of pages that mention a brand at approximately 1.48 citations per page. The coefficient of variation on that ratio is 9.5 percent across payment processors, exchanges, DeFi, DePIN and gambling. Doubling the pages that mention a brand roughly doubles its citations, and nothing else in the dataset moves the multiplier by more than about 16 percent.
Most of the AEO surface is off your own site. 92.22 percent of citations land off the brand's own domain. In SEO your own pages are the asset. In AEO your own pages are under 8 percent of the surface, which is why a programme that only publishes on its own blog stalls.
Page treatment behaves differently too. Being the subject of a page returns 6.22 citations per brand, against 3.78 for appearing in someone else's ranked list and 3.39 for absence, on non-overlapping intervals. In search, appearing in a high-ranking roundup is often worth more than owning a thin page. In AI answers the ordering inverts.
How to split budget between them
The honest answer depends on where your buyers currently research, and for most categories that is still both. A practical split, in order of what is cheapest to fix:
- Shared foundation, roughly 30 percent. Crawlability, server-rendered content, structured data, genuinely useful pages. This work serves both disciplines and there is no reason to duplicate it. The one AEO-specific addition is allowing AI crawlers explicitly, which costs nothing and is the most common silent failure.
- SEO-specific, roughly 35 percent. Keyword targeting, internal linking, technical performance, backlink acquisition. Still the right investment for terms with real search volume, and still where transactional intent converts.
- AEO-specific, roughly 35 percent. Coverage expansion across third-party sources, entity consistency, subject-of-page assets, and measurement on a fixed prompt set. This is the line most teams have not created yet.
Two allocation mistakes are common. The first is treating AEO as a content-team task, when the data says the dominant lever is third-party coverage, which is a PR and partnerships budget rather than a blog budget. The second is cutting SEO to fund AEO on the assumption that search is finished. Search is not finished, and the shared foundation means the two compound rather than compete.
Which one shows results first
AEO moves faster on removal and slower on construction. Fixing crawler access or a broken entity graph can change an answer within days, because it unblocks something rather than building something. Coverage expansion is slower than an SEO content programme, because it depends on other people publishing on their schedule rather than on yours.
SEO is the reverse. Nothing moves in days, but once a page ranks it tends to keep ranking. AI answers are non-deterministic: the same prompt returns different brands on consecutive runs, so an AEO gain has to be read as a trend across repeated samples rather than as a single reading. That is also why two tools report different scores for the same brand on the same day.
AEO vs SEO, answered.
Is AEO replacing SEO for crypto?
No: AEO sits on top of SEO. Strong SEO foundations (crawlable site, authority, good content) feed the answer engines, but AEO adds new priorities: third-party mentions, structured data, and entity consistency. Crypto teams should keep doing SEO and add AEO, not swap one for the other.
What's the core difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO wins a ranked position on a results page that a user clicks. AEO wins a citation inside the single answer an AI engine generates. SEO optimizes for keywords and links; AEO optimizes for mentions, entities, structure, and the trust signals the model uses to choose who to cite.
Can the same content work for both AEO and SEO?
Often yes. Clear, well-structured, schema-marked content with direct answers tends to rank in search and get cited by AI. The difference is emphasis: AEO rewards quotable passages, comparison tables, FAQs, and being mentioned across third-party sources: not just on-page keyword targeting.
How do I measure AEO vs SEO?
SEO is measured by rank, impressions, and clicks. AEO is measured by citation share: how often AI engines name and cite you for your category prompts. citeOS measures the AEO side across 5 engines and 20 buyer prompts, 100 observation points per scan.
Rank is only half the story.
